Goal Setting Theory
Psychology is a popular and widely studied science which explores human’s mind and behavior. Numerous researchers attempt to understand the way our brain works as well as our emotions, intelligence, and personality function in general. As a result, they offer various theories that are aimed at the explanation of psychological and biological processes taking place in an individual and affecting the whole society. Some of the most studied problems in the field of psychology are motivation and goal setting. The theories providing insight into these issues help people better understand themselves, set objectives, and find the most appropriate ways of achieving them.
The Theory of Goal Setting concerns the development of a plan or program that helps a person stay motivated and reach his or her goals. The researchers of the theory claim that our goals should be ambitious rather than primitive. In this case, the improvement and performance would be more efficient. An increased understanding of the Goal Setting Theory considerably helped my personal development. I have learnt how to develop plans for my goals and objectives properly. Moreover, it is easier for me now to find the best ways of their developing and reaching.
Speaking about the application of the theory in my life, I would like to dwell upon some specific concepts. The thing that has utmost importance is the choice of the goal. First of all, it is necessary to determine whether this or that goal is worth one's attention. It is necessary to anticipate what one would achieve performing that goal plan. It is important to make direct efforts and implement activities that are relevant to one's objectives in goal pursuing. This concept also helps me not to be distracted from my main goal and pay attention to the things I need to do.
Another important concept which I found useful for reaching my aims is the effort principle. Now I comprehend that in order to obtain what I really want it is important to make as many efforts as I really can. The theory gave me a hint that I should perform intensely and be persistent and hard-working. Moreover, if there are any difficulties on one's way, it is not a reason to abandon the goal. The more efforts one puts, the more pleasant the results will be. For example, when I had to take an exam I studied hard for a few weeks. After the exam, when I got a good grade it was enjoyable to feel that I was able to reach my goal.
One more thing that the theory presents is the concept of persistence. Before studying this theory, I very often had a tendency to relinquish my goals. Now I try to work towards reaching my objectives or whatever I want to do till the end. If I can not achieve them one way I will find another solution.
The last concept that I try to lead is the cognition of my goals. It is a known fact that goals can develop individuals and change their behavior in a good way. I tried to experience this concept and after passing my exam successfully, I understood that there was nothing impossible. Consequently, setting my goal any time I realize that I am able to reach it. I need to create a plan, follow all its points and instructions, and the result is guaranteed. People who face all the challenges and achieve their goals become more successful and broad-minded.
In conclusion, the knowledge and studying of some psychological theories can help one become more conscious of his or her individual and social problems. Implementation of such knowledge in the life of an individual gives him or her an opportunity to find the best means and ways of pursuing goals as people perform better when they are committed to reaching certain objectives.
